Big Creek Lake Watershed Management Plan

The best way to safeguard water quality is to protect it at its source. Recognizing the importance of protecting Big Creek Lake, the source of our drinking water, MAWSS joined forces with the Alabama Coastal Foundation to develop the Big Creek Lake Watershed Management Plan. Its goal is to protect and improve the natural resources of the Big Creek Lake Watershed while educating MAWSS customers and watershed residents about the importance of the watershed.

The document provides a summary of existing and potential environmental concerns in the Big Creek Lake Watershed and strategies to encourage, sustain and improve environmental quality and prevent additional degradation to the watershed associated with existing and rapidly changing land uses and other pressures.

To solicit input for the development of this plan, the Big Creek Lake Resource Alliance was formed as a communication link between MAWSS, local businesses and community stakeholders. Input was gathered through community meetings where information on non-point source pollution was shared and discussed, along with possible solutions.
The plan remains a work in progress and will be updated as often as necessary.
