MAWSS Urges Preparation for Hurricane Isaias

Oct 8th, 2026

While Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) expects to provide continuous service during a Hurricane, we encourage customers to take precautions to ensure they have an adequate supply of safe drinking water available.

  • Store water for drinking and cooking in clean containers. Use quality plastic containers instead of glass to minimize breakage. Avoid paper containers such as milk cartons because they weaken over time. Do not use containers that once contained chemicals or toxic material.

  • A good rule of thumb is to store one gallon (about 4 liters) of water per person per day. Plan for at least three days. You'll need more water in hot temperatures and for strenuous activities. People with special needs, such as nursing mothers, young children, or family members with illnesses, also need more water. Don’t forget to allow water for pets.

  • Fill bathtubs, sinks, and all available containers with water to supplement the water you have stored. If necessary, your hot water heater can supply you with a good amount of water in an emergency.

  • Disinfected tap water stored in clean, airtight containers in a cool location should remain safe indefinitely. However, we suggest changing your emergency water supply every six months to ensure it stays fresh.

  • Should customers experience a disruption of water service, it is recommended that you consider the water unsafe to drink. If that occurs, boiling water for at least three minutes is an effective way to ensure that it is safe to drink. You can also disinfect water with chlorine tablets, iodine tablets, or unscented household chlorine bleach to kill bacteria.

If MAWSS customers experience a loss of service or notice any failure in the water or sewer system, please report it by calling our 24-hour customer care service at (251) 694-3165.
