Heavy Rains Cause Wastewater Overflows

Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) responded to two wastewater overflows in the Mobile area June 1, 2024 due to heavy rainfall.  Wastewater overflows occur when heavy rains infiltrate aging sewer lines.  MAWSS is addressing wastewater overflows with capital projects.  Below are the locations, estimated amounts and receiving waters.  All overflows have stopped.

MAWSS sewer system is designed to collect and convey wastewater to a MAWSS wastewater treatment plant. During heavy rains, storm water infiltrates and inundates aging sewer lines causing manholes to overflow.  Health department precautions regarding contact with impacted waters and seafood preparation should be followed.
